Guide: The Tools Book
by Phil Stutz and Barry Michaels
Overview: What is The Tools?
Written by psychiatrists Phil Stutz and Barry Michels, The Tools flips traditional psychotherapy on its head. Instead of spending years digging through past trauma to figure out why you are stuck, Stutz and Michels offer immediate, action-oriented visualizations designed to change your internal state in real-time.
The core premise is simple: Insight alone doesn’t create change—action does. When you use a Tool, you break through personal resistance and tap into “Higher Forces”—dynamic psychological energies that propel you past fear, anger, procrastination, and self-doubt.
Key Foundational Concepts
Before diving into the tools, you need to understand the forces at play within your mind:
- Part X: The inner enemy. It is the invisible force of resistance, self-sabotage, and negativity that wants to keep you comfortable, small, and afraid. Every tool is designed to defeat Part X.
- The Shadow: The disowned, hidden, or ashamed parts of yourself that you try to hide from the world. Instead of hiding it, you must collaborate with it.
- The Snapshot (The Illusion): The false belief that you can achieve a state of perfect, permanent comfort where pain and effort no longer exist.
- The Maze: The mental trap of lingering resentment, where you waste energy seeking “fairness” or revenge for past wrongs.

Deep Dive: The 5 Core Tools
1. The Reversal of Desire
Goal: Push through discomfort and take action on things you avoid.
Most people run away from pain toward comfort. This tool flips that impulse: you move toward the pain to unleash forward momentum.
- When to use it: When procrastinating, avoiding a difficult conversation, or feeling stuck in your comfort zone.
- How to execute:
- Facing pain: Picture the pain/discomfort you are avoiding as a cloud in front of you.
- Desire pain: Silently say to yourself, “Bring it on,” and step directly into the cloud. Want the pain because it has value.
- Move through: Feel yourself absorb the pain, saying, “Pain sets me free.”
- Emerge: Picture yourself stepping out of the cloud into a realm of pure light, moving relentlessly forward.
2. Active Love
Goal: Break out of anger and emotional paralysis caused by other people.
Holding onto grudges places you in “The Maze,” freezing your growth while you wait for the world to be fair. Active Love frees you from the trap.
- When to use it: When someone triggers rage, resentment, or obsessive negative thoughts.
- How to execute:
- Concentrate love: Visualize all the love in the universe contracting into a warm, glowing sphere inside your chest.
- Transmit love: Project this light out of your chest straight into the person who pissed you off. Don’t hold anything back.
- Penetrate: Feel the light enter them completely, filling them up with acceptance and warmth.
- Relax: Feel yourself merge back with the limitless supply of universal love.
3. Inner Authority
Goal: Overcome self-consciousness and speak or act with genuine confidence.
Insecurity happens when you try to hide your “flaws” from an audience (or an intimidating individual). This tool leverages your Shadow as your source of strength.
- When to use it: Before public speaking, high-stakes meetings, social gatherings, or difficult conversations.
- How to execute:
- Visualize the shadow: Bring up an image of your Shadow—the embodiment of your insecurities and perceived shortcomings.
- Bond: stand next to your Shadow. Feel a nonverbal, deep bond of absolute unconditional acceptance between you two.
- Stand together: Look at the audience/person with your Shadow at your side as a unified team.
- Speak as one: Direct the joint energy of you and your Shadow outward. Command the space together.
4. The Grateful Flow
Goal: Dissolve anxiety, worry, and dark moods instantly.
When Part X convinces you that everything is terrible, The Grateful Flow reconnects you to the fundamental abundance of life.
- When to use it: When experiencing anxiety, doom-scrolling, feeling overwhelmed, or experiencing pessimistic spirals.
- How to execute:
- List items: Silently state 5 specific, small things you are grateful for. Go slow and feel the appreciation for each item.
- Feel the gratitude: Stop coming up with new items. Focus exclusively on the physical sensation of gratitude expanding in your chest.
- Connect to the source: Feel your heart open up to a higher, background energy—the Source—that continuously creates good in the world.
5. Jeopardy
Goal: Create immediate willpower when you are tempted to slack off or give up.
Part X lies to you by whispering, “You have plenty of time; do it tomorrow.” Jeopardy uses the reality of impermanence to snap you into action right now.
- When to use it: When drifting through your day, giving into bad habits, or failing to follow through on long-term goals.
- How to execute:
- Visualize your deathbed: See your future self on your deathbed, at the very end of your life.
- Feel the regret: See that deathbed version of you screaming in frustration because you wasted your potential and didn’t act when you had the chance.
- Snap Back: Bring that urgency back into your present body. Feel a surge of fierce, unshakeable determination to make this moment count.
Daily Practice Strategy
To make these tools work, treat them like physical reps at a gym:
- Real-Time Reaction: Use a Tool the second you feel the trigger (e.g., the instant you hesitate to send an email, apply Reversal of Desire).
- Short & Fast: Each visualization takes only 3 to 5 seconds. You do not need to sit in meditation for 20 minutes.
- High Frequency: Expect to use these tools dozens of times a day. Repetition builds the psychological muscle needed to defeat Part X over time.
